Assessment of visual acuity is probably the oldest and certainly the most common diagnostic of seeing. It is well understood from a signal detection point of view and thus it is sad that “Snellen charts” are still widely in use; furthermore, an abundance of
units muddies the field <<a href="https://michaelbach.de/sci/acuity.html" target="_blank"><span style="color:blue">https://michaelbach.de/sci/acuity.html</span></a>>. I will start with the psychometric function as basis of the “3 of 5” rule (embodied in the
Freiburg Vision Test, <<a href="https://michaelbach.de/fract/" target="_blank"><span style="color:blue">https://michaelbach.de/fract/</span></a>>), cover “normal acuity”, feedback, practice effects, screening for primary school enrolment, hyperacuity, (ultra)

<b><span style="font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Times New Roman",serif;mso-fareast-font-family:"Times New Roman";mso-ansi-language:EN-GB" lang="EN-GB">Bio:</span></b><span style="font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Times New Roman",serif;mso-fareast-font-family:"Times New Roman";mso-ansi-language:EN-GB" lang="EN-GB">
Michael Bach studied Physics, Computer Science and Psychology. His PhD work at the University of Freiburg, Germany, dealt with single- and multiunit neuron recordings in animal models. He went on to work in the Eye Center of Freiburg university, recording
diagnostic electrophysiology from patients. In his research he employed mainly psychophysical and electrophysiological techniques trying to understand human vision. With 300+ papers (h-index 63), he is interested in all things vision from basic science to
ophthalmological pathophysiology. For eight years he was president of the International Society for Clinical Electrophysiology of Vision (ISCEV). Now emeritus, he serves ISCEV as Director of International Communications and continues research in a modest way.
In 2020 he received the “von Graefe Award” by the German Ophthalmological Society.
