<span style=""><i>QuantumBirds</i></span> brings together electrophysiology, <span style="">
behavioural</span> biology and molecular biology, quantum physics and spin chemistry, in a unique, ambitious,
<span style="">imaginative</span> and genuinely synergetic research <span style="">
programme</span>. We are working in unique magnetic-controlled research building and testing conditions. Using these we aim to prove magnetic detection occurring in the birds’ retinas involving light stimulation and quantum spin dynamics.</span></p>
<p style="margin: 0cm; font-size: 11pt; font-family: "Calibri", sans-serif;"><b><span style="font-size:12.0pt; font-family:"Arial",sans-serif" lang="EN-US">The project</span></b></p>
<p style="margin: 0cm; font-size: 11pt; font-family: "Calibri", sans-serif;"><span style="font-size:12.0pt; font-family:"Arial",sans-serif" lang="EN-US">Light-dependent magnetoreception in night-migratory songbirds is thought to start in the retina. Magnetic
 signals likely leave the retina via <span style="">thalamofugally</span> projecting retinal ganglion cells which represent a subset of the >40 different types of retinal output channels. One of the most pressing challenges is to identify these types and measure
 their responses to magnetic (and light) stimuli. To find <span style="">magnetically-sensitive</span> cells in the bird retina, we will characterize retinal ganglion cells by 2P-calcium imaging, combined with immunohistochemical approaches. You would work
 with world leading experts in their field, who regularly publish their findings in the best scientific journals (including
<span style="">e.g.</span> 7 papers in Nature since 2009). </span></p>
