<p class="MsoNormal">Research Assistant on project PROBabLE Futures: Probabilistic AI Systems in Law Enforcement Futures</p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><b>Salary: Grade 7</b>, <b>£39,347 - £44,263 per annum.</b></p>

<p class="MsoNormal">We are looking for a motivated Research Assistant to play a key role in the PROBabLE Futures project (<a href="https://www.northumbria.ac.uk/about-us/academic-departments/northumbria-law-school/probable-futures/">https://www.northumbria.ac.uk/about-us/academic-departments/northumbria-law-school/probable-futures/</a>),
a consortium of six universities working alongside law enforcement, third-sector, and commercial partners to develop a framework for understanding the implications of uncertainty and building confidence in future Probabilistic AI in law enforcement.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><o:p> </o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">This project is funded by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) as part of a 4-year £3.5 million Responsible AI (RAI) UK Keystone project. The consortium brings together researchers from the Universities of Northumbria, Glasgow, Northampton,
Leicester, Cambridge, and Aberdeen. The academic team includes Co-Investigators with expertise in computing science, law, criminal justice, social innovation, and participatory methodology. Project partners include National Police Chiefs’ Council, UK Government’s
Chief Scientific Adviser for Policing, and Centre for Emerging Technology and Security (CETaS).</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><o:p> </o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">You will research AI explainability, fairness, and ethics, statistical methods for machine learning, probabilistic/predictive modelling, and decision support techniques for autonomous systems and systems with humans in the loop. You will
be expected to write research articles for leading conferences and journals, organise your workload, and proactively contribute towards the project’s objectives. This includes developing links with external organisations and contributing to partner and funder
engagement activities. Ability to work with and gain trust of external stakeholders especially police organisations will be essential.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><o:p> </o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">You should hold a PhD (or be close to completion) in computer science, statistics, mathematics, engineering, or other relevant disciplines and have up-to-date knowledge in advanced AI topics, such as deep learning, generative models, representation
learning, sequence models, and NLP. Experience in software development in relevant areas (data processing, machine learning, deep learning, visualisation libraries) is desirable.</p>
