Dear All

We are seeking a PhD student for an investigation using advanced retinal imaging technology and machine learning to develop a sensitive and specific diagnostic test for Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease. This multidisciplinary
project is in collaboration with the University of Manchester, Manchester Royal Eye Hospital and the Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust.

Retinal imaging will be carried out using two state-of-the-art imaging systems. You will collect retinal images in the Optometry Department at the university using a custom-built Adaptive Optics-Optical Coherence Tomography system capable
of imaging retinal structure and function at the resolution of individual cells. The capabilities of this instrument make it one of only a handful of instruments around the world. Images of the retinal vasculature will be obtained at Manchester Royal Eye
Hospital using the Canon Xephilio. This is the first commercially-available system of its kind in Europe and provides ultra-wide imaging of discrete retinal vasculature layers, including of superficial and deep capillary plexuses using AI enhanced high resolution
imaging.

Several statistical and machine learning strategies will be used to quantify the diagnostic utility of combining the two imaging technologies for diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease.
