Psychology at Heriot-Watt University, UK is looking for a Graduate Teaching Assistant / PhD student (closing date 23rd November 2021).


How do traits of anxiety and/or autism affect deaf and hearing BSL signers' and non-signers' sensitivity to identity and emotions of faces?  This interdisciplinary project between will understand how sensitive people who use British Sign Language are to the identity and emotions of faces and how psychiatric and neurodiverse traits affect this sensitivity.  Deaf people have an advantage in face processing over people with hearing.  They use faces both for grammatical purposes and to express emotions of themselves or others during signing, paying more attention to faces than the hearing population.  Anxiety, including social anxiety, depression and being on the autism spectrum, affects social communication and emotion processing and there is a greater prevalence of psychiatric disorders in deaf people.  Behavioural performance will be measured for different faces across a range of experimental paradigms and may involve recording eye movements.  This will advance theory (e.g., facial feedback hypothesis) as well as the development of effective interventions to reduce psychological distress and ensure they are effectively tailored to deaf people.

The supervisory team for this project area will consist of Dr Louise Delicato, Dr Mel McKendrick & Prof. Graham Turner.
