The project
Perception is not exclusively driven by sensory input but is shaped by expectation, knowledge, and experience (so-called priors). In the last two decades, this insight has been formalised in the context of Bayesian models of perception. Using such models, priors can be indirectly estimated by examining systematic biases in perception. This PhD project aims to develop and use novel measures of Bayesian priors to investigate how they vary across individuals and across the senses. In particular, the project focuses on the extent to which certain priors generalise across vision and hearing. Our labs are equipped with state-of-the-art facilities for psychophysical testing of vision and hearing, as well as the measurement of eye and head movements. There will be an opportunity to use computational methods.

The successful candidate
We are looking for an enthusiastic, motivated, and innovative individual with an excellent degree in psychology, biology, neuroscience, or engineering/computer science. Some research experience in experimental psychology and programming skills (e.g., C/Java/Matlab/Python) are desirable but not essential as long as you have the enthusiasm and aptitude to learn.

About us
We are based both at the School of Psychology (http://psych.cf.ac.uk/) and the Cardiff University Brain Research Imaging Centre (http://sites.cardiff.ac.uk/cubric/). The School of Psychology at Cardiff is one of the largest and strongest in the UK. In the 2014 research excellence framework, Cardiff was one of the UK's top three universities for its world-leading research in psychology, psychiatry and neuroscience. The School and the Imaging Centre have state-of-the art testing facilities, a world-class community of perception researchers / cognitive neuroscientists and a thriving postgraduate research group.
