Vision-Science Research Assistant Professor
The Storm Eye Institute invites applications and nominations to fill a Vision Science Position at the rank of Research Assistant Professor. This position is part of the South Carolina SmartState Center on Gene and Pharmaceutical Treatment of Retinal Degenerative Diseases. A focus of the center is to study mechanisms of retinal degeneration in models of age-related macular degeneration. This project is highly collaborative, requiring an applicant with a strong interest and motivation for interdisciplinary research. The successful candidate will have a strong background in cell biology, ophthalmology, neurosciences or immunology. Candidates interested in the development of novel therapeutic approaches are particularly encouraged to apply.

Candidates should have a Ph.D. degree (or equivalent) with experience in molecular biology, protein chemistry, immunohistochemistry and cell biology preferred. Experience with complement biology and/or animal models of AMD will be advantageous. In addition, candidates should have a compelling history of obtaining extramural funding. Current research strengths in the department include photoreceptor cell metabolism, neuroprotection in glaucoma, pluripotent stem cell differentiation, retinal degenerative disease, and molecular biology of RPE function. Research at MUSC is supported by several excellent core facilities specializing in imaging, genetically modified mice and rats, drug discovery, proteomics, genomics, and flow cytometry. The Department is located in the Storm Eye Institute and consists of 27 clinical and research faculty, 9 of which are full-time research faculty. The Department has strong philanthropic support with nine endowed chairs.

The Medical University of South Carolina is home to the NCI-designated Hollings Cancer Center, a Clinical and Translational Science Award, a Center for Genomic Medicine, and new research buildings in Bioengineering and Drug Discovery, and is experiencing growth in clinical programs and outreach.
