A postdoctoral position is available at the University of Aberdeen, Scotland, UK. This post is supported by a BBSRC award to Dr Jasna Martinovic and Dr Rama Chakravarthi entitled: "Neural mechanisms of long-range spatial vision: an investigation of perceptive, integrative and association fields across the lifespan". It will be offered for a period of 32 months from the 1st of September 2018.

The aim of this project is to build a unitary framework for object recognition mechanisms that will encompass neural processing within various kinds of visual fields across the lifespan. We will combine psychophysical and EEG methods to characterise changes in visual processing with age in healthy adult observers. Specifically, we will connect properties of receptive/perceptive fields, which take in basic luminance and colour information, to properties of integration fields and association fields, which subsequently differentiate or group this information for perceptual organisation. The project will use the same paradigm to systematically examine the following long-range spatial processes, which have hitherto often been studied separately: 1) masking, occurring within perceptive fields, 2) crowding, taking place within integration fields, and 3) contour integration, dependent on association fields. The across-lifespan aspect of our research allows us to assess both between-group and individual differences that offer an exciting window into the neural mechanisms that sustain information processing in long-range spatial vision.

The postdoctoral researcher is expected to play a key role in conducting the project. They will programme and conduct psychophysical and EEG experiments, analyse and interpret the behavioural and EEG data and prepare manuscripts for publication. This project is technically sophisticated and a candidate with strong quantitative skills (programming, digital signal processing, modelling, statistics) is sought.

Salary will be at the appropriate point on the Grade 6 scale (£32,548- £35,550 per annum), with placement according to qualifications and experience.

Informal enquiries are welcome and should be made to Dr Jasna Martinovic, senior lecturer in the School of Psychology (e-mail: j.martinovic at abdn.ac.uk<mailto:j.martinovic at abdn.ac.uk> ).

Should you require a visa to undertake paid employment in the UK you will be required to fulfil the minimum points criteria to be granted a Certificate of Sponsorship and Tier 2 visa. As appropriate, at the time an offer of appointment is made you will be asked to demonstrate that you fulfil the criteria in respect of financial maintenance and competency in English. Please do not hesitate to contact Marian Elliott-Jones (m.elliott-jones at abdn.ac.uk) for further information.
