INSTITUTE OF OPHTHALMOLOGY

Bath Street, London EC1V 9EL

Research Associate or Senior Research Associate

Colour and Vision Research Laboratories

Applications are invited for the post of Research Associate or Senior Research Associate in the research group of Andrew Stockman and Christopher Dainty at the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology in London to join an existing, ongoing project funded by the BBSRC. The project is to build, program and operate a high-performance adaptive optics (AO) visual stimulator and then to use it to test visual performance at and beyond the usual optical and neural limits. The instrument is near completion and we expect the postholder to be able to complete construction and testing within 6 months. In the last phase of the project, we and the postholder will use the device to make psychophysical measurements of human visual performance. The successful candidate should have a first degree in physics or engineering and a Ph.D. in a field related to optics and/or vision research. Experience in optical engineering and in the design and construction of optical instruments is essential. In addition, experience with optical design software (e.g., Zemax), computer programming (e.g., MatLab or Python) and the generation of visual stimuli (e.g., using PsychToolbox or PsychoPy) is desirable. Experience with human perceptual or psychological measurements, computer modelling and electronics would all be assets. Quantitative and English writing skills and a strong scientific background with laboratory experience are essential. We will consider applications to work on a part-time, flexible and job share basis wherever possible.

The post is from 1st September, 2018. The appointment will be either at the Research Associate level (Grade 7: £34,635 - £41,864 per annum) or at the Senior Research Associate level (Grade 8 £43,023 per annum) depending on qualifications and experience. The post is funded by the BBSRC for 1 year.
