Dear colleagues,
We are excited to be able to send an advance announcement about the 7th edition of the Visual Science of Arts Conference (VSAC), which we will organize in Leuven from August 22 to 24, 2019. VSAC is an interdisciplinary conference intended to bring together vision scientists and visual artists to discuss joint interests in how vision works and how it affects the visual pleasures we get from art and images. It has started as a satellite meeting to the European Conference on Visual Perception (ECVP) but over the years it has gained its own flavor and dynamics. Special effort will be made to also attract academics from other disciplines than vision science (art history, visual studies, cultural studies, philosophy of art, …) as well as established and young artists and art students.
We are proud to announce Robert Pepperell (Cardiff Metropolitan University, Wales, UK), who is both a scientist<http://www.cardiffmet.ac.uk/artanddesign/staff/Pages/robertpepperell.aspx> and an artist<http://robertpepperell.com>, to give a keynote lecture on “Integrating art and science: Challenges and opportunities”, in which he will integrate recent work from his Fovolab<http://www.fovography.info/>. In addition to (invited) symposia, regular talk sessions, and multiple poster sessions, we will organize special, innovative types of sessions and activities to facilitate the interaction between academics and artists. We will make maximal use of the elaborate network of artists and the cultural sector in Leuven (STUK, M, ARTEFact, Mintlab, …) to help us realize this ambition.
The local organizers are all affiliated to the University of Leuven (KU Leuven), belonging to 5 different faculties and to the LUCA School of Arts. KU Leuven is the oldest university in the Low Countries (founded in 1425) and presently Belgium’s largest university. The conference venue will be a collection of university buildings in the attractive historical center of Leuven, all within easy walking distance from each other. Leuven is a pleasant, pedestrian-friendly, small university city located in Flanders, the Dutch-speaking region of Belgium. Leuven<https://www.visitleuven.be/en> is approximately 25 kilometers east of Brussels, with a direct 15-min train connection to the national airport (Brussels-Zaventem), which makes it easy to reach from anywhere in the world and an attractive hub to visit major cities in Belgium (Antwerp, Ghent, Bruges, …) and elsewhere in Europe (Amsterdam, Paris, London are all less than 2h away by train from Brussels-Midi).
Please save the date. We look forward to welcoming you at VSAC in Leuven in 2019!
On behalf of the local organizers,
Johan Wagemans
