In the laboratory of retinal physiology at the University Hospital Erlangen a doctoral position is available in the project "Function and dysfunction of rod- and cone-driven pathways: novel approaches for measuring treatment effects" funded by the German Research Council (DFG). The project is part of the DFG priority program "Gene and cell based therapies to counteract neuroretinal degeneration".
The task of the doctorate student will be to perform psychophysical experiments using novel stimulation techniques involving an eight channel LED stimulator. The experiments will be performed with normal subjects and with patients with well-defined photoreceptor degenerations. The project is highly inter-disciplinary and will be performed in collaboration with the lab members performing electrophysiological recordings on the subjects and with other labs in the priority program (e.g. with Dr. Harmening at the University of Bonn).
The Friedrich-Alexander University (FAU) Erlangen-Nürnberg is one of the biggest universities in Germany. The goal of the laboratory of Experimental Ophthalmology is the development of electrophysiological and psychophysical methods in human subjects and in animals to study the physiology and the pathophysiology of the retina.
Salary is according to German rules (TVL E12 50%).
Erlangen is located in the north of the state of Bavaria in the region of Franconia. The region is well known for its beer breweries and vineyards. It is located close to Nürnberg and other well-known places such as Bamberg and Bayreuth.
