A new NSF-funded post-doctoral fellowship position is available in Dr. Thomas Shipley’s Lab at the Department of Psychology, Temple University. Review of applications will begin immediately.  The ideal candidate would be available in the next few months, but the position will remain open until filled. The position is one-year renewable up to three years. The post-doctoral fellow will join an interdisciplinary team of geoscientists, psychologists, and engineers in a project aiming to support geoscience experts as they work to collect field data. The position will be funded by a new NSF Future of Work at the Human - Technology Frontier grant that integrates cognitive science and intelligent systems to enhance geoscience practice.

The post-doctoral fellow's main responsibilities will be to participate in week-long field research trips to conduct expert interviews about 3D data collection (predominantly in the Mecca Hills area of California), to develop a program of research to characterize geoscientists' skill in visualizing 3D relations in the Earth and the uncertainty in their reasoning about the Earth. This work will be conducted in collaboration with a group of expert geologists led by Dr. Basil Tikoff at University of Wisconsin, and robot engineers in Dr. M. Ani Hsieh’s research group in the University of Pennsylvania’s School of Engineering. The interdisciplinary team incorporate critical field features and expert’s disciplinary goals into exploration routines for robot drones collecting data for geologists.

Candidates with a PhD in cognitive psychology, learning sciences, or a related field, with research experience in the domain of spatial cognition, expertise, uncertainty, or visual completion are encouraged to apply. Strong analytic, research, and writing skills are required, and a record of published research is highly desirable. Salary will be at NSF post-doctoral rates.
