Anne Treisman<https://www.princeton.edu/news/2018/02/14/anne-treisman-visionary-cognitive-psychologist-dies-82> (1935-2018) had a profound impact on research in attention and adjacent fields. Whether you agreed or disagreed with her theories, you could not ignore them. Moreover, whether you agreed or disagreed with her, she would be insightful, supportive, and gracious in response. The year 2020 will mark the 40th anniversary of her seminal paper on Feature Integration Theory (Treisman, A., & Gelade, G., 1980,. A feature-integration theory of attention. Cognitive Psychology, 12, 97-136.). To honor that milestone and to honor her memory, Attention, Perception, & Psychophysics will publish a special issue to which we invite your contribution.



At the core of Treisman's Feature Integration Theory<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Feature_integration_theory> was the idea that there were fundamental features that could be identified in parallel across the visual field. However, if you wanted to identify an object based on the way that those features were combined, it would be necessary to attend to that object. She argued that the selective attention that enables the "binding" of features and the recognition of objects operates in a serial fashion. At any moment, only one or maybe a very small number of objects can be attended. These and other ideas from Feature Integration Theory have generated extensive debate and research. The 1980 paper has almost 12,000 citations (Google Scholar). >From its publication to 2008, the paper was cited by 274 papers in what was then Perception & Psychophysics. In 2009, the journal became Attention, Perception, & Psychophysics and, since that time, almost 10% of papers in the journal have cited Treisman and Gelade (1980).

For this special issue, we welcome submissions that have a connection to Feature Integration Theory, broadly conceived. Contributions related to other aspects of Anne Treisman's work (e.g. her work on auditory attention) may be appropriate as well. Empirical papers, theoretical papers, and integrative reviews will be considered. Behavioral, imaging, and neurophysiological approaches are all encouraged. If you have any question about a possible submission, please contact one of the guest editors. We recommend an inquiry in the case of proposed theoretical papers and review articles.



All submissions will undergo normal, full peer review, maintaining the same high editorial standards for regular submissions to Attention, Perception, & Psychophysics.

Manuscripts should include a cover letter indicating that the submission is for the special issue honoring Anne Treisman.



Because this is a journal special issue, not an edited book, the deadline is firm; our intention is to publish the special issue 6-8 months after the submission deadline. Revisions invited by the guest editors will be expected within two months of receipt of the editorial decision letter and reviews.
