Assistant Professor in Design
The Design Lab at UC San Diego (https://designlab.ucsd.edu) seeks
candidates for tenure-track faculty positions at the Assistant Professor
rank. The Design Lab at UC San Diego is a new initiative, established by
the chancellor to become a major international center for human-centered
design, with the focus upon design as a way of thinking, especially dealing
with a people-centered approach to complex sociotechnical systems.
The Design Lab works with departments and divisions throughout the
University. 2019 Design Recruiting is partnering with eight departments:
Computer Science & Engineering, Electrical & Computer Engineering,
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering, Structural Engineering, Cognitive
Science, Psychology, Infectious Diseases, Family Medicine & Public Health,
and Psychiatry. In your cover letter, please indicate which of these
department(s) you think might be a good fit for your research & teaching.
It is unlikely that we will hire in 2019 outside these departments. That
said, we welcome applications in all areas. Design is hiring through three
advertised recruitments: the Social Sciences, Engineering disciplines, and
Medical fields. Please apply through the recruitment that is closest to
your work and specify the department/area that best fits your work in your
cover letter.
Assistant Professor candidates must have completed a terminal degree–such
as a PhD, MD or equivalent doctoral degree, or relevant terminal master’s
degree and show great promise in teaching, service and research. Preferred
candidates will have published human-centered research in conference and/or
journal articles in highly-regarded peer-reviewed venues; be able to
demonstrate the potential for teaching excellence as they will be expected to
supervise and teach graduate and undergraduate students in design-related
courses; demonstrate the highest standards of scholarship and professional
activity; and contribute to a campus climate that supports equity,
inclusion, and diversity. An interdisciplinary perspective and experience
with multiple methodologies is highly valued. Candidates with experience
with or willingness to engage in activities that contribute to diversity
and inclusion are especially encouraged to apply. The successful applicant
will be expected to establish a vigorous program of high-quality funded
design research.
