A NIH funded PhD studentship is available in the laboratory of Dr. Nathan Doble at the College of Optometry/Department of Ophthalmology at The Ohio State University (OSU). The successful candidate will enroll in the PhD program in Vision Science at The Ohio State University and conduct their dissertation work within a highly collaborative research environment focused on the development and use of novel high-resolution optical instrumentation for the study of retinal structure and function. The candidate will be expected to assist with construction and validation of novel instrumentation as well as the collection and analysis of the experimental data; preparation of research results for publication and talks; writing the scientific manuscripts, progress reports, and gain experience in grant writing.
This particular project will be conducted in collaboration with the University of California, Davis to design and implement full-field optical coherence tomography (FF-OCT) to study the structure and function of individual retinal neurons in living human and murine eyes.
A description of the PhD program curriculum and graduation requirements can be found at https://optometry.osu.edu/graduate-program-doctor-philosophy. Funding for this position is based upon an expectation that the successful applicant will complete their degree in four years.
Background:
An ideal candidate would have experience in the field of biomedical imaging / optics / physics / electrical engineering. Experience in the development & application of optical instrumentation for biomedical imaging would be particularly advantageous.
Education:
BS / MS in physics, optics, biomedical physics, biomedical engineering, or electrical engineering.
Interested candidates should submit a cover letter, resume, a statement of research skills and interests, and contact details of three referees (please describe relationship to each). Applicants should send documentation directly to Dr. Nathan Doble (doble.2 at osu.edu<mailto:doble.2 at osu.edu>).
Review of applications by the laboratory PI will begin immediately. The successful applicant will then secondarily be instructed to apply for admission to The Ohio State University graduate school following the ordinary application procedure and review. This position is available immediately and is not constrained to the posted review and admission cycle to the OSU Vision Science graduate program.
