Abstract:  Ocular surface diseases and injuries are important public health concerns that can reduce vision and quality of life.  Developing new approaches to these conditions is critical to advancing patient care.  In this presentation, peptide based strategies for treating ocular surface inflammatory conditions and epithelial injuries will be discussed.  In addition, efforts to understand the mechanisms of action of these new therapies will be described.

Bio: Dr. Aakalu is a fellowship-trained, oculofacial plastic surgeon and clinician-scientist.  He is an Associate Professor of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC). At UIC, Dr. Aakalu directs a multi-specialty thyroid eye disease clinic and a drug development accelerator [Illinois Center for Ophthalmic Drug and Diagnostic Development (ICOD3)].  Work in the Aakalu laboratory is focused on developing new therapeutics for ocular surface diseases and other conditions.  The group studies both new drugs and regenerative medicine based innovations.
