The Fries Lab at the Ernst Strüngmann Institute (ESI) for Neuroscience in Cooperation with Max Planck Society in Frankfurt, Germany, recently started developing a novel software framework: Systems Neuroscience Computing in Python; SyNCoPy, https://github.com/esi-neuroscience/syncopy SyNCoPy is a fully open-source Python environment for neuronal data analysis. SyNCoPy is scalable and built for very large datasets. It is designed to excel in high-performance computing (HPC) environments by leveraging the parallelization and distributed-computing capabilities of Dask, a modern data analytics framework. It is compatible with the MATLAB toolbox FieldTrip. To pursue the further development of SyNCoPy, the Fries Lab is complementing the current SyNCoPy team with a

The position is initially limited to a period of two years with the possibility of extension and can start as soon as possible.

· Implementation of novel analysis routines in SyNCoPy

· Optimization of concurrent/parallel computing routines in SyNCoPy

· Design of programming interfaces with external Python and MATLAB packages for SyNCoPy

· Intermediate experience with Python, specifically with the packages NumPy, SciPy and scikit-learn

· Knowledge of and passion for applied statistics, time series analysis and/or digital signal processing

· Strong interest and at least some experience in data visualization

· Practical know-how of Git

· Interest in open-source software development

· Some experience with MATLAB and/or Octave

· Know-how of HPC cluster queuing systems (SLURM)

· Neuro-scientific background
What We Offer:

· Room to grow and learn: from software design through mathematical problem solving to end user support

· Exciting environment at an excellent research institute

· Small core development team with flat hierarchies

· Possibility of working remotely

The successful candidate will benefit from the mentoring of the existing SyNCoPy team of two experienced Research Software Engineers. An integral part of the position is the further development of skills in the above mentioned areas through workshops and courses. The salary is in accordance with the TVöD (Bund). Interested candidates are invited to send a cover letter briefly explaining their professional background and programming experience, a CV, and, if possible, web-links to relevant software projects they contributed to as one PDF file to hr-esi at esi-frankfurt.de<mailto:hr-esi at esi-frankfurt.de> with the subject line "SyNCoPy Fries Lab" before January 31st, 2022.
