The deadline for this Special Issue in Vision Research has been extended to April 30, 2022 (see below)

Eye Movements in Visual Impairment

Eye movements are made by a very broad range of species, particularly those with a retinal region of higher spatial sensitivity. Our eye movements support a wide range of sensory and motor visual behaviours. In some instances, we use these ocular movements to redirect the line of sight to a new object of interest, whilst in others they stabilize visual input to support detailed spatial analysis or prevent the unwanted experience of motion blur. Beyond our own eye movements, observing those of others provides important social information, revealing their focus of attention and signalling when this changes.

Visual impairment can impact how we move our eyes to interact with the world. This is an important area of study, both to understand how visual loss affects eye movement control and how gaze might change to compensate for it. This Special Issue seeks contributions that address eye movements across a range of visual impairments, from those that affect visual field such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, and hemianopia to those that distort the movement or alignment of the eyes, such as in developmental disorders of vision. Papers that address oculomotor challenges due to these impairments (either real or simulated) and the resulting functional adaptations to fixation, saccades and pursuit in laboratory tasks, eye-hand coordination and mobility are particularly welcome.
