Abstract: Many dystrophies causing blindness either directly affect the retina or areas further up the central visual pathway. The last decade has seen an explosion of engineering technologies (some very expensive ones and some not so much!) that promise to be the next “game changer” in restoring sight for patients affected by these dystrophies. This talk aimed at a broad audience, will give an overview of some of the technologies that have made more headlines in the last few years, including their premise, the science behind their “real” benefits, some of the hype, and yet to be resolved pitfalls and challenges.

Bio: A/Prof Mohit Shivdasani is an Associate Professor in Bionics and Neuromodulation in the Graduate School of Biomedical Engineering at UNSW. A/Prof Shivdasani began his bionics career in the field of artificial hearing, developing a brain stimulation device for his PhD (awarded 2009), which morphed into a postdoctoral stint at the Bionics Institute in Melbourne over 8 years that developed Australia’s first bionic eye for artificial vision, going from concept to first-in-human trials in 3 years. Since 2018, A/Prof Shivdasani has been at UNSW in a research and teaching capacity and has been continuing to dabble in sight restoration research as well as developing various other bionic technologies, the newest of which is a device to treat neuroinflammation of the gut for inflammatory bowel disease.
