The research group "Animal Navigation" headed by Prof. Henrik Mouritsen at the Institute of Biology and Environmental Sciences, University of Oldenburg has been awarded a 6-year ERC Synergy Grant for a project entitled QuantumBirds: Radical pair-based magnetic sensing in migratory birds together with Prof. Peter Hore, University of Oxford. Applicants are invited for a

Postdoc-position in Electrophysiology (m,f,d)
(100% E13 TV-L, 3 years; the position is suitable for part-time work;
there is the possibility of habilitation)

starting from 1st of November 2022 in Oldenburg, Germany.

Working in QuantumBirds brings together electrophysiology, behavioural biology and molecular biology, quantum physics and spin chemistry, in a unique, ambitious, imaginative and genuinely synergetic research programme. We are working in unique magnetic-controlled research building and testing conditions. Using these we aim to prove magnetic detection occurring in the birds’ retinas involving light stimulation and quantum spin dynamics.

The project

Light-dependent magnetoreception in night-migratory songbirds is thought to start in the retina. Magnetic signals likely leave the retina via thalamofugally projecting retinal ganglion cells which represent a subset of the >40 different types of retinal output channels. One of the most pressing challenges is to identify these types and measure their responses to magnetic (and light) stimuli. To find magnetically-sensitive cells in the bird retina, we will characterize retinal ganglion cells by 2P-calcium imaging, combined with immunohistochemical approaches. You would work with world leading experts in their field, who regularly publish their findings in the best scientific journals (including e.g. 7 papers in Nature since 2009).

You ideally have

  * A PhD in biology, neuroscience, physics, biochemistry, veterinary medicine or related disciplines.
  * Practical experience with electrophysiology (if possible proven by a publication)
  * Advanced programming skills (Matlab) and strong experience in data analysis
  * Experience with the retina and/or magnetic sensing mechanisms
  * Good understanding of imaging techniques and experimental planning
  * Physical understanding and ability to independently work with Ca-imaging
  * Intrinsic motivation for a career in academia, wanting to develop towards an independent research group
  * High levels of enthusiasm, motivation and ability to work effectively as part of an interdisciplinary team
  * Willingness to work in the dark
  * Good spoken and written English

What we offer

The QuantumBirds (www.quantumbirds.eu<file:///C:/Users/Tina%20Schl%C3%BCter/Documents/ERC/Stellenausschreibungen/www.quantumbirds.eu>) project is located at the University of Oxford, UK (physical and chemical aspects) and at the University of Oldenburg, Germany (behavioural and molecular- biological, as well as biochemical aspects), and collaborates with retina specialists, such as Karin Dedek and Martin Greschner within the University and from around the world e.g., Kevin Briggman at the MPI for Neurobiology of Behavior - caesar.

The position is based in Oldenburg and you would become part of a large diverse team working closely together on related questions. You will have access to a wide range of modern equipment (e.g., custom-built two-photon Ca2+-imaging setup), techniques and expertise. We want to give you a good start for a potential career in academia.

Our working group is central in the DFG funded SFB program "Magnetoreception and Navigation in Vertebrates" which will help you to expand your network. For more information about our group, see http://www.member.uni-oldenburg.de/henrik.mouritsen/ and https://www.sfb1372.de/

Family and scientific career is supported by us and the University of Oxford and the University of Oldenburg.

We and the University of Oldenburg are aware of the power of diversity. In order to increase the percentage of female faculty and staff members, female candidates with equal qualification will be given preference. Applicants with disabilities will be preferentially considered in case of equal qualification
