Dear colleagues

As you may know, my branch at the National Cancer Institute has a strong interest in areas of vision science, perception, and cognition pertaining to cancer and cancer survivors, including medical image perception. I am very pleased to announce that the NCI has now signed on to NIH’s parent announcement for R01 projects that are considered “Basic Experimental Studies with Humans”, or BESH. Most studies in perception and cognition can be difficult to fit into the standard NIH “clinical trials” format, and the BESH designation was created to be more friendly to this type of research. I hope this will make it easier and more appealing for investigators to submit their proposals to our program. Please see the formal announcement below for details.

Thanks
Todd

Parent R01 – Basic Experimental Studies with Humans Required

This Parent Funding Opportunity Announcement is for basic science experimental studies involving humans, referred to in NOT-OD-18-212<https://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/notice-files/NOT-OD-18-212.html> as “prospective basic science studies involving human participants.” These studies fall within the NIH definition of a clinical trial and also meet the definition of basic research. Types of studies that should submit under this FOA include studies that prospectively assign human participants to conditions (i.e., experimentally manipulate independent variables) and that assess biomedical or behavioral outcomes in humans for the purpose of understanding the fundamental aspects of phenomena without specific application towards processes or products in mind.
