The Psychology and Clinical Language Sciences Section of the University of
Reading Malaysia is delighted to announce one fully funded (domestic
student rate) PhD Studentship, with Graduate Technician responsibilities
starting in July 2023. As a PhD Student (Graduate Technician), you will
complete your PhD in four years whilst contributing to the technical
support of the Section, including providing statistics support to
undergraduate and postgraduate students and supporting the management of
the experimental facilities. A monthly stipend of RM2,200 is also provided
subject to the satisfactory provision of Graduate Technician duties.

Successful candidates will join a thriving research and teaching-focused
team, with excellent research facilities including EEG, eye trackers, and
psychometric tests. Our research covers areas such as perception and
cognition, forensic psychology, nutrition, face processing, social
psychology, and cultural psychology.

The University of Reading Malaysia is the first branch campus of the
University of Reading. The School of Psychology and Clinical Language
Sciences is known for its emphasis on experimental approaches and rigorous
research and is one of the oldest psychology departments in the UK.

Applications from candidates interested in human cognition and mental
health are encouraged to apply. Candidates may also have advisors from the
UK campus and other universities.

Main responsibilities:

   1. To successfully complete a PhD under the supervision of Dr Tan Kok
   Wei and Dr Shumetha Sidhu, examining the biophilia hypothesis by
   investigating the impact of nature (vs. urban) exposure on cognition,
   mental health, and physiological functioning.
   2. To organise and run undergraduate statistics workshops, seminars and
   tutorials as required.
   3. To support undergraduate students’ learning through marking
   assessments and providing feedback.
   4. To support the day-to-day management of the lab and related
   facilities, such as the SONA research panel.
   5. To provide academic and research support to students with their
   projects, predominantly final year dissertation projects. This would
   include working with students to develop and design research materials and
   experiments and also provide day to day troubleshooting of academic issues
   relating to project work.

Interested candidates should submit a one-page CV detailing their
educational and employment background, plus a two-page research proposal to
Dr Tan Kok Wei (t.kokwei at reading.edu.my), by Monday 15th May 2023. *Candidates
should ensure their CV conveys the relevant information as per the person
specification below.* Candidates are advised to ensure their proposal
aligns with the research topic stated above. Research proposals should
include a summary of the literature, the key research question(s), and a
brief overview of methods and data analysis.

Candidates should possess a Master’s degree in psychology or cognate
discipline, demonstrate the potential to develop an original line of
research in an area that aligns with the Section’s research expertise, and
have a 1st class or 2:1 bachelor’s degree (or equivalent). Experience in
designing either cognitive or psychophysical tasks is essential. Experience
using specialist lab equipment, such as psychometric tests, eye-tracker,
EEG/ECG as well as experience supporting undergraduate students with
statistics are desirable.

Please note that only short-listed candidates will be contacted. Interviews
will be held in the last week of May 2023 at the EduCity campus. Candidates
are expected to attend the interview in person, although teleconference
interviews can be arranged if necessary.

Terms and conditions

This PhD studentship is full-time and for four years. The post is based on
our Iskandar Puteri campus in Malaysia. The terms and conditions will be
standard terms and conditions for a PhD student at the University of
Reading Malaysia.
