We are excited to announce Dr. James Brockmole will be the OPAM 2023
Keynote Speaker!

Dr. Brockmole is Professor of Psychology and Associate Dean for Research
and Strategic Initiatives within the College of Arts and Letters at the
University of Notre Dame, where he also leads the Visual Cognition
Laboratory.

Dr. Brockmole and his students investigate how humans form, store, employ,
and manipulate short- and long-term representations of objects and scenes
via behavioral and eye tracking methods. Across his career, he has
investigated the factors that control the deployment of visual attention,
the properties of visual working memory, the effects of context on visually
guided tasks, the influences of action on attention and memory, individual
and group variability in visual processing, and the applications of visual
cognition research to educational contexts.

His lab has received funding from organizations such as the National
Science Foundation, European Research Council, and UK's Economic and Social
Research Council. He is currently funded by the Templeton Religion Trust
which is supporting an interdisciplinary project on experience,
understanding, and memory for visual art. Dr. Brockmole is also the
Editor-in-Chief of Psychonomic Bulletin & Review.

Dr. Brockmole is passionate about mentoring trainees, and has been actively
involved in supporting the development of post docs, graduate students, and
undergraduate researchers both in his lab and through his direction of
Notre Dame’s Institute for Scholarship in the Liberal Arts which provides
students with research opportunities, funding, and other forms of
professional support.

Dr. Brockmole completed his B.A. at Notre Dame and his Ph.D. at the
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, after which he completed a
postdoctoral fellowship at Michigan State University. He was previously a
Lecturer (Assistant Professor) and Reader (Associate Professor) at the
University of Edinburgh before transitioning back to Notre Dame. To learn
more about Dr. Brockmole and his work, please visit his lab page
