The Computational Cognitive Science Lab led by Dr. Moreno I. Coco at the
Department of Psychology, Sapienza University of Rome is looking for one
post-doctoral fellow to join for 2 years and contribute to the project “The
attentional curve of forgetting visual information in younger and older
adults: experimental and computational insights.”, which is funded through
the programme PRIN 2022, sponsored by our Ministry of Education and
Excellence (MIUR).
This project combines novel experimental eye-tracking paradigms with
advanced statistical modelling to provide a new theoretical and practical
angle to investigate the cognitive phenomenon of forgetting, which is yet
poorly understood. It aims to tackle three main objectives: (1) link overt
attention to forgetting naturalistic visual information and provide key
insights into the relationship between acquisition and memory decay; (2)
develop statistical and mathematical models that can predict the rate of
forgetting at the level of individuals and stimuli, integrating recognition
performance, cognitive efficiency and measures of overt attention and (3)
uncover the impact of cognitive ageing on the attentional curve of
forgetting to gauge the memory mechanisms that change, or are preserved, as
we age.

I am seeking a highly motivated computational cognitive scientist with a
Ph.D. in Human Cognitive Neuroscience, Computer Science, Brain and
Cognitive Sciences, and cognates disciplines.

I expect solid experience in eye movements and memory mechanisms with
desirable knowledge of cognitive ageing; and an excellent command of
computer programming in at least one of the following languages: Matlab, R,
Julia, Python or C++.

These skills will be assessed during the interview taking place on the *25th
of October*.

The deadline to receive applications is the *13th of October, 2023. *

Candidates are requested a Curriculum Vitae complete with all academic
track records, and two reference letters. Moreover, they have to fill in 4
separate documents (see Annexes A, B, C and D) that can be found in the
announcement of the call.

As the process may be a bit bureaucratic, especially regarding these forms,
candidates who may need support in filling out the documents can get in
touch.

The Sapienza University of Rome scores third in Italy and 171st in the
world according to the 2023 QS World Ranking. The Department of Psychology
is the first in Italy, with a strong orientation towards quantitative and
applied research in psychology and has been awarded several excellence
grants in the past decades. It is equipped with various technologies to
study human cognition behaviourally (e.g., eye-tracking with/without
virtual reality) and physiologically (e.g., electroencephalograms), and its
faculty members enjoy strong links with other public research institutions
(e.g., Santa Lucia Hospital).

Rome, also known as the “Eternal City” does not need much presentation. It
is the vibrant capital of Italy. It offers a wide range of cultural
heritage sites, museums, top-quality food, and entertainment. Being placed
at the centre of Italy, it also makes it an ideal position to discover
other beautiful spots in our country.

For informal inquiries please send an email to Dr. Moreno I. Coco (

Best regards,

Dr Moreno I. Coco
