Applications are invited for one fully funded 4-year PhD position at the
University of Beira Interior (UBI), Portugal, in collaboration with the
University of Turin, Italy. UBI is a top 7% University (CWUR Ranking) with
an expanding team of highly qualified young researchers in image analysis,
computer vision and deep learning.
This PhD fellowship aims to push forward the interpretability in medical
imaging by taking advantage of diffusion models to create inherently
interpretable models capable of explaining their decision process through a
concise textual description or through a set of prototypes.
The position is for a 4-year PhD program. The student will spend 1 year (2
years maximum) at the University of Turin under the supervision of Attilio
Fiandrotti and 2 years (3 years maximum) at the University of Beira
Interior under the supervision of João Neves.

The estimated starting date is 01/2024.
The contract and salary will be according to Portuguese legislation (

Extra salary will be given when abroad.
Candidates should hold a BSc or MSc degree in computer science or related
areas.
Prospective applicants should have:
• Strong academic record with an excellent M.Sc. degree (or equivalent)
in computer science, applied mathematics, or electrical/biomedical
engineering, preferably with expertise in more than one of the following
areas: medical image analysis, machine learning, computer vision, pattern
recognition, XAI.
• Experience with a deep learning framework (preferably PyTorch).
• Research experience in computer vision, machine learning or image
processing is also desirable.
• Publications in a peer-reviewed journal or conference on a related
topic are a bonus.
