[visionlist] Sophie Wuerger

My earliest memory of Sophie was a bike ride we shared through the cobblestone streets of Tubingen, in 1995 at ECVP. I remember it so vividly because I was seated somehow on the handlebars, desperately trusting in Sophie’s mastery of bike, traffic, and town. The episode encapsulates Sophie’s madcap, but masterful energy and love of fun. The years since witnessed many further adventures, rambling in the Peaks District, rollerblading in Florida, and halcyon days at ARVO, VSS, and ECVP. In every venue she would always be a beacon of happy energy. Yet all of this fun was somehow synergistic with her scientific explorations. She had a unique spin on color science, a part of which she shared with Al Ahumada and myself when she joined us in California on sabbatical in 2001. There we did some early work on spatio-chromatic modeling of the CSF (Wuerger et al., 2002), a project she continued earnestly until the present, with Rafal Mantiuk and many others (Ashraf et al., 2023). In 2019, as I and Mehmet Agaoglu were developing our Chromatic Pyramid of Visibility, she and Rafal kindly shared their recent CSF data, before they were published! 

My most recent visits with Sophie were in London in July 2022, and at ECVP in Cyprus, in August 2023. In both encounters she was beautiful, vibrant, and happy. That is some consolation. A life well lived, right to the end.
