I write with great sadness to let you know that Sophie Wuerger (Professor of Vision Science at the University of Liverpool) passed away on 3 January after a courageous battle with liver cancer.

Sophie did her undergrad studies at the University of Regensburg, then moved to the States for her PhD at NYU with Michael Landy and John Krauskopf. After a postdoc with Krauskopf and Larry Maloney she moved to the UK, where she briefly worked as a postdoc at UCL and then moved on to hold permanent positions at the University of Keele and then at Liverpool.

Sophie excelled both in basic and applied research - grounded in her own cutting-edge fundamental research on biological colour mechanisms and colour appearance, her masterful applications of this knowledge spanned the fields as wide-ranging as colour remapping for advanced display technologies, skin imaging and 3D printing, and clinical applications of colour and light. She also had a very active and innovative research programme of multisensory perception, conducted collaboratively with her husband Dr Georg Meyer.

I spent a year working as Sophie's graduate research assistant in 2003/4 and was delighted to get the opportunity to return to her lab after my PhD. I couldn't have wished for a better mentor than Sophie - beyond just gaining scientific skills and knowledge, I learned a whole load of other things that cannot be easily put into words, a formative experience that happens when you have the privilege of working with such a wonderful, generous and spontaneous person, proactive, positive and energetic, with an optimistic and practical outlook, excited about what each day - in the lab and beyond - would bring. I know I am not the only one who will miss Sophie hugely - going to conferences will never be the same without sharing a laugh, discussing all the research on show and coming up with exciting new ideas together.

 Sophie leaves behind her husband Georg, daughter Charlotte and son Henry.
