*Eye movements as windows to the mind: The integration of eye movements,
perception, attention, and cognition – Honoring the contributions of Eileen
Kowler*
https://jov.arvojournals.org/ss/eileenkowler.aspx
Traditionally, eye movements were assumed to be driven by low-level sensory
signals. Throughout her career, Eileen Kowler transformed the field by
demonstrating that eye movements are not merely reflexive but instead
mirror broader aspects of visual perception, including cognitive factors
such as prediction and attention. Her work addressed critical issues in eye
movement control, ranging from fixational eye movements to the sensorimotor
integration of the eyes with vision, head position, and hand reaching
movements, as well as how attention, memory, and prediction guide gaze
shifts and smooth pursuit eye movements. Her contributions have been
instrumental in shaping our current understanding of eye movements as
deeply connected to—and scientifically informative about —all aspects of
vision science.
For this special issue, we invite research papers that build on Kowler’s
work and engage with the fundamental questions in the study of vision and
eye movements that her research program introduced or addressed.
