Dear all,
I am searching for a PhD student and a PostDoc for the FNR CORE project BayesCompare, which will focus on Bayesian methods for comparing representations. The positions are scheduled to start 1st of June for the PhD student and 1st of September for the PostDoc.
With this project we will develop fully Bayesian methods to compare representations (of visual stimuli) in deep neural network models to each other and to data from brain measurements. I envision one of the two coworkers to work on the applications to deep neural networks and one on the applications to neuroscience. Thus, there will be ample opportunities to learn about and work on state of the art deep neural networks, models of the visual system and the analysis of neural measurements. Additionally, I place high value on the methods we develop being applied by other researchers, such that we will definitely make the methods available to them. I was able to implement the methods for a linear Gaussian case, such that a complete failure of this project is exceedingly unlikely. You can get more insights into how I envision these methods to work from a preprint that I put out recently (https://arxiv.org/abs/2411.08739).
To apply you need a Master's degree or PhD respectively in a relevant field like cognitive science, data science, statistics, computer science or neuroscience. To succeed in this project, the successful candidates will profit from the following qualities:
* Experience with (Bayesian) statistics, deep neural network models, Kernel Methods, or data science
* Experience with models of human perception or cognition, especially visual perception
* Experience with programming, especially in Python, Pytorch and/or statistics libraries
* Experience with the analysis of neural data like fMRI, MEG/EEG, or electrophysiology
* Enthusiasm for interdisciplinary research & research methods
* Strong analytical skills and a collaborative mindset
The PhD position starts 1st of June 2025 and is funded for 3 years + 1year for dissemination. At the current index level, the yearly gross salary for every PhD student at UL is EUR 40952 (full time). PhD students at UL are both employees and students of the university enrolled in PhD programs, which provide courses in soft and hard skills. Progress in the project is monitored by a 3 person CET board of professors and PhD students have to finish in 4 years by law. You can find the official job positing here: : http://emea3.mrted.ly/3tte6
The PostDoc position is funded for 2.5 years from 1st of September. At the current index level, the yearly gross salary for every Postdoctoral Researcher at the UL is EUR 83099 (full time). You can find the official job positing here: http://emea3.mrted.ly/3ttec
The University of Luxembourg is the only university of the small country Luxembourg in Europe. Here, we are proud of our multilingual, open culture that welcomes people from all over Europe and the rest of the world. As is customary here in Europe, both positions come with full benefits, like health insurance, contributions to retirement funds, etc. Also we have funds for traveling and access to several tiers of high performance computation clusters and I maintain good relationships with researchers in other countries that can enable exchange stays elsewhere.
Early application is highly encouraged, as the applications will be processed upon reception. Please apply ONLINE formally through the HR system. Applications by Email cannot be considered. Informal inquiries can be sent to heiko.schutt at uni.lu<mailto:heiko.schutt at uni.lu> .
All qualified individuals are encouraged to apply. In line with our values, the University of Luxembourg promotes an inclusive culture. We encourage applications from individuals of all backgrounds and are dedicated to upholding equality and respect for our employees and students.
Best wishes
Heiko
