Dear VSS members,

As we navigate a shifting landscape in science policy and research funding,
we want to take a moment to re-affirm that VSS remains strong, independent,
and committed to advancing vision science and the diversity of our
community.

VSS 2025 is moving forward, full steam ahead! The scientific program is set,
abstract acceptances were sent out, and the Board of Directors, Student
Postdoctoral Advisory Committee and Meeting Organizers are putting finishing
touches on the events we all have come to expect and enjoy! This will
include our Public Lecture - this year, to be held at the Dali Museum and
given by Patrick Cavanagh. Our Visibility event, FoVea gatherings, and our
Diversity workshop will go on as planned.

Additionally, VSS will be 25 years old this year! How should this milestone
be celebrated? We are open to suggestions but believe that this year
presents a unique opportunity, which starts by us attending our annual
conference in force, presenting our research, mentoring our trainees, and
supporting the

vibrant scientific forum it is today.

For our international attendees, your presence at this year's VSS conference
is more essential than ever. Attending the conference does not impact the
new US government in any way. But it is critical to keep VSS and the
international visual science community strong and cohesive. In the interest
of transparency, VSS exists because of membership fees, and the conference
itself is made possible by registration fees. Fewer members and fewer
attendees means we will have to dig unsustainably deep into our reserves. We
hope to continue to thrive as an international society!

For those of you in the US, there are important votes coming soon on funding
for vision science. In the vision research community, our voices in
Washington are NAEVR/AEVR and FABBS, two organizations of which VSS is a
member - they are doing their part. Now we ask that you also do yours:
contact your local representatives (find their contact information here

personalize and send. NAEVR/AEVR also ask that in addition to contacting
your members of Congress, if you've been impacted by the Federal Funding
Freeze, you share your story with them at this address (
<mailto:advocacy at eyeresearch.org> advocacy at eyeresearch.org), so that they
can build a stronger, factual case to communicate to Congress on our behalf.
Finally, we received a message from FABBS with the following request to
contact key Senate offices about the importance of NIH, NSF, and IES to
their constituents and the role that these agencies serve to support health,
improve education, and advance the economy in their states. Four target
states are listed below, where FABBS will host advocacy office hours to
share information about Senators, provide contact information for relevant
legislative staff, and review resources for developing personalized talking
points - we encourage any VSS members from those states to please sign up:
