Dear Colleagues,

(Apologies for cross posting).

I am thrilled to announce that we are recruiting for a PhD position titled

Next Generation Ophthalmic Testing: “Continuous Psychophysics” for Rapid and User-Friendly Assessment of Visual, Movement, and Cognitive Disorders

About the project: This PhD project will develop and evaluate innovative clinical tests using “Continuous Psychophysics,” a method based on tracking a moving target (Bonnen et al, 2015). The core concept involves assessing vision, motor skills, and cognition simultaneously through performance on a straightforward, game-like task. The successful candidate will develop computational models (Straub, & Rothkopf, 2022) and tasks that effectively extract meaningful clinical information from this simple paradigm.

Supervisory team: Dr Guido Maiello (lead supervisor); Dr Erich Graf; Professor Andrew Lotery; Dr James Self

Entry requirements: The successful applicant will need at least a 2:1 honours degree (or international equivalent<https://www.southampton.ac.uk/uni-life/international/your-country.page>) in Psychology, Neuroscience, Biomedical Sciences, Computer Science, or related fields. Having already completed a Master’s degree is considered desirable but not necessary. Experience in programming (e.g., MATLAB, Python) or previous research experience in basic/clinical vision science or psychophysics is advantageous.

Fees and funding: This PhD studentship is fully funded for UK candidates by Wessex Medical Research. The studentship will cover tuition fees, stipend (currently £20,780 per annum), and support for project/research consumables and conference attendance. International applicants are welcome to apply but will need to qualify for Horizon Europe fee waiver<https://www.southampton.ac.uk/study/fees-funding/scholarships/postgraduate-uk/horizon-europe-fee-waiver>.

Application deadline: 30 June 2025

Location: University of Southampton, Southampton, UK

Duration: 3.5 years

How to apply: To see further project details and application procedures visit https://www.southampton.ac.uk/study/postgraduate-research/projects/next-generation-ophthalmic-testing-continuous-psychophysics
