Dear Perception Colleagues,

Sadly, dr. Emanuel Leeuwenberg recently passed away (June 2025). During his long term academic career Emanuel Leeuwenberg, or shortly ‘Maan’, was affiliated with the Radboud University in Nijmegen (the Netherlands) where he was also head of the Perception Division of the former 'Nijmegen Institute for Cognition and Information' (now part of the Donders Institute). Maan retired in 2004 when he turned 65. He was an exceptionally smart, charismatic and pleasantly idiosyncratic person. He became well known among students of perception in the late 60’s and 70’s of the previous century. Throughout his career, Maan studied a variety of topics in the field of visual perception with a strong focus on perceptual organization and the role of the simplicity principle - which formed the core of his Structural Information Theory. As well as being a scientist, Maan Leeuwenberg was also an excellent painter (and was locally famous for his comic cartoons!). The perception community has lost an extremely friendly, remarkable man, passionate and full of humor.
