Dear Colleagues,
Funding is available, via a Leverhulme Trust sponsored project, to study for a PhD in Psychology at the University of Stirling, UK.
Full details of the project are available on findaphd.com: https://www.findaphd.com/phds/project/the-perception-of-far-distances-in-real-and-virtual-worlds/?p186364
The Perception of Far Distances in Real and Virtual Worlds
Accurate depth perception is essential for navigating through and interacting with the world. As distance increases, however, many common depth signals become less effective. Despite this issue, existing research on depth perception has focussed almost exclusively on near space. While technical barriers have played a role in this focus, these can now be overcome using Virtual and Augmented Reality technologies.
In this project, the student will apply these technologies in combination while psychophysical research methods to rigorously assess the accuracy and precision of human distance perception at a multi-kilometre scale. In so doing, the student will quantify the signals available for far-distance perception, assess how they contribute to human distance perception, and provide an understanding of how the brain represents distance at this scale.
Interested students should hold an undergraduate or Masters degree in Psychology or a related, relevant subject (e.g. computer science, biology, physiology).
