Apologies for any cross-posting.

Applications are invited for a full-time 4-year PhD at Cardiff University under the Medical Research Council (MRC) GW4 Biomed2 Doctoral Training Partnership (DTP) scheme. I would be grateful if you would please draw your students’ attention to this opportunity.

The GW4 BioMed MRC Doctoral Training Partnership is a collaboration between Cardiff, Bristol, Bath, and Exeter Universities. The partnership aims to develop the next generation of medical researchers by offering studentships to both medical and non-medical UK, EU, and international students across strategic research themes.

The PhD opportunity
If successful in their application, the student will design and perform psychophysical experiments, as well as undertake experiments with optical coherence tomography (OCT), perimetry, and other functional/imaging measures on healthy individuals and clinical populations, training in scientific methods, and taking ownership as the project progresses. This is an exciting opportunity to develop and apply basic science and translational research skills while working with a patient population. The student will also have opportunities to develop skills in analysis of psychophysical and imaging data. Further details about the project can be found here: https://gw4biomed.ac.uk/novel-area-modulation-stimuli-for-identifying-changes-in-visual-field-sensitivity-in-age-related-macular-degeneration-amd/

Supervisory arrangements
The PhD will be supervised by Dr Tony Redmond (Cardiff University), Dr Kristian Skoczek (Cardiff University), Dr Denize Atan (University of Bristol), and Dr Pádraig Mulholland (Ulster University). The research is allied with the REVAMP Study (www.revamp-vision.com<http://www.revamp-vision.com/>) and the student will work closely with a wider group of longstanding collaborators across different institutions, including Cardiff University, Ulster University, University of Bristol, University College London, and Moorfields Eye Hospital.

Deadlines
The deadline for applications is 20th October 2025 at 17:00 (UK time), however Cardiff University reserves the right to close the opportunity early should a sufficient number of high-quality applications be received before the deadline. The intended start date is 1st October 2026.

Eligibility and how to apply
Details regarding eligibility and how to apply for the PhD opportunity can be found on the DTP webpages: https://gw4biomed.ac.uk/how-to-apply/student-applications/ Note that funding is allocated on a competitive basis and will be awarded to students whose applications rank highest across various projects in different disciples under the DTP scheme. Please pay particular attention to the recruitment timeline and process for awarding funding to students: https://gw4biomed.ac.uk/how-to-apply/student-applications/how-to-apply/ If the student is successful in their application, it will cover a UKRI-level stipend, university fees for four years, a limited annual research support training grant, and a travel grant of GB£300 per year.

Enquiries
Please direct informal enquiries to the lead supervisor, Dr Tony Redmond (RedmondT1 at cardiff.ac.uk<mailto:%20RedmondT1 at cardiff.ac.uk>).
