A PhD place is available in the Lingnan Visual Cognition Lab (PI: Will Hayward) for a funded project on idiosyncratic eye-movement patterns to faces. The project will involve using data analytic methods to understand why different people scan faces differently. Experience with eye-tracking, both using desktop systems (e.g., Eyelink 1000 or Tobii Pro Fusion) and head-mounted systems (e.g., Pupil Labs Neon), is an advantage but not necessary. Experience with PsychoPy and PsychToolbox is also helpful. An example paper on this line of research can be found here:

Zhong, N., Hsiao, J. H., Zhou, G., & Hayward, W. G. (2023). Association of idiosyncratic eye-movement patterns with holistic processing of faces as measured by the composite face effect and the face inversion effect. Visual Cognition, 31, 485-500. https://doi.org/10.1080/13506285.2024.2315783

Lingnan University is a publicly-funded research intensive university. The Lingnan Visual Cognition Lab sits within the newly formed LU Cognitive Science Research Centre, with newly refurbished lab space including Tobii Pro Fusion and Pupil Labs Neon eye-trackers, and a Neuroscan Okti 128 Ch EEG system. Support is available for attending international conferences and visiting laboratories overseas.

Hong Kong has a well-funded environment for pursuing science and offers highly competitive support for outstanding PhD applicants. In particular, the Hong Kong Postgraduate Fellowship is administered by the Hong Kong Research Grants Council and can be held at any of the publicly funded universities, including Lingnan University. Therefore, applicants are encouraged to apply for the position via the HKPFS — instructions are available here:

Applications are due by December 1, 2025, Hong Kong time. The successful applicant will begin study in September 2026.
