The journal Frontiers in Ophthalmology is accepting submissions for a
special issue dedicated to New Technologies in Ophthalmology.

This special issue is being co-Edited by Prof. Lakshminarayanan (University
of Waterloo, Canada) and Prof. Vohnsen (University College Dublin).
Paper submission deadline is September 7th 2026 but a brief summary
statement (150 - 300 words) can be submitted now (as soon as possible) to
assist in the process.
The special issue will cover:
Full-length, mini, and systematic reviews spanning a wide range of topics,
including but not limited to:
• Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning applications in ocular
diagnostics and care
• Biophotonics and advanced optical imaging technologies
• Computational methods for analyzing ophthalmic data
• Innovative drug-delivery systems for ocular therapies
• Gene therapy and optogenetics in vision restoration and treatment
• Low vision rehabilitation technologies and strategies
• Nanoscience and nanotechnology applications in ophthalmology
• Non-invasive assessment and monitoring of the visual system
• Development and implementation of ophthalmic devices and imaging
modalities (hardware and software)
• Advanced surgical materials, tools, and procedures (including laser-based
treatments)
• Virtual reality or assisted reality devices for ophthalmic education and
patient engagement.
