Postdoctoral fellowship in human category learning

A postdoctoral fellowship is available to lead a joint project between Prof. Charley Wu, Prof. Frank Jäkel and Prof. Thomas Wallis, at the Centre for Cognitive Science at the Technical University of Darmstadt, Germany. The position is funded via the Excellence Cluster “The Adaptive Mind” (TAM; https://theadaptivemind-excellencecluster.de) and is for a duration of three years.

The project will study how humans can flexibly trade off similarity and rule-based mechanisms to make category judgments. We will develop a generative grammar of shapes, casting the problem as one of program induction. In collaboration with other TAM partners, we aim to characterize behaviour in these tasks across the lifespan.

Responsibilities:

  *   Research in the area of Cognitive Science, in particular with respect to categorization, category learning, Bayesian modelling, program induction, and generative models
  *   Teaching in the area of Cognitive Science
  *   Communication of scientific results in the form of documentation, reports, presentations and research articles

Prerequisites:

  *   Doctoral degree in cognitive science, computer science, psychology, or related fields
  *   familiarity with Python, R, MATLAB or similar programming languages,
  *   proficient in English,
  *   excellent communication, analytic, problem-solving and software skills,
  *   organizational skills, highly motivated, team-player

Desirable:

  *   previous experience with human categorization, program induction, and / or generative grammars for shapes
