Dear colleagues

Applications are invited for a Marie-Curie-funded PhD/research-assistant position in my lab on THE ROLE OF FOCUS CUES IN IMPROVING PERCEIVED REALISM IN STEREOSCOPIC 3D IMAGERY. Details below. Please note the eligibility requirements—applicants must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the UK for more than 12 months in the previous 3 years immediately before appointment.

take care

THE ROLE OF FOCUS CUES IN IMPROVING PERCEIVED REALISM IN STEREOSCOPIC 3D IMAGERY

Closing Date: 16.02.18
Salary: £30,500 p.a. (subject to tax)

Applications are invited for a 36-month Early Stage Researcher position (PhD studentship) in visual perception in novel stereoscopic 3d displays, supervised by Dr. Simon Watt.

The researcher will join an 11-member Marie Sklodowska-Curie funded Innovative Training Network, RealVision: Hyper-REAListic VISual Experience (http://www.realvision-itn.eu/). The network is focused on innovation in hyper-realistic imaging, encoding and display technologies. It comprises research groups across Europe specialising in Multimedia, Optics, Visual Communication, Visual Computing, Computer Graphics and Human Vision.

The post offers excellent cross-disciplinary research training opportunities (as well as a relatively high salary). PhD training will include secondments with partners, and working closely with Rafal Mantiuk’s lab at the Department of Computer Science and Technology, University of Cambridge. The funding will also provide significant interaction with the network as a whole.

The researcher will contribute to the development and evaluation of novel display techniques, with the aim of making hyper-realistic digital imagery. The project will examine the importance of focus cues (retinal blur and the eye’s focusing response) to perceived realism, and will involve measurement of the eye’s focusing response, eye movements, and perception in 3d stereo imagery.

Environment: Simon Watt’s lab at the School of Psychology at Bangor offers unique facilities that combine novel stereo displays with measurement of oculomotor and upper-limb responses (http://pages.bangor.ac.uk/~psse2d/index.html). Bangor is situated in a beautiful region of North Wales close to Snowdonia National Park, which provides a wonderful backdrop to professional life.

Requirements: The researcher will have a good first degree and MSc (or equivalent experience) in a relevant discipline, such as Psychology, Vision Science, Neuroscience, or Computer Graphics (involving user studies). A strong work ethic and genuine enthusiasm for research are essential.

Eligibility: Applicants can be of any nationality, but the funding requires they must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the UK for more than 12 months in the previous 3 years immediately before appointment.

The successful candidate will be expected to start March to April, 2018.

Potential applicants are strongly encouraged to contact Dr Simon Watt for informal discussions (s.watt at bangor.ac.uk<mailto:s.watt at bangor.ac.uk>).
