Date: Thursday, 12 September 2024

Time: 1600-1700 CEST

Location: Zoom

Abstract:

Lutein (L), zeaxanthin (Z) and meso-zeaxanthin (MZ) are concentrated in the human macula, where they are collectively known as macular pigment (MP). This yellow pigment (MP, which is of dietary origin) has been shown to contribute to protection against ocular disease by its optical (blue light filtration) and biochemical (antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and neuroprotective) properties. Furthermore, augmentation of MP with supplemental macular carotenoids has been shown to improve different measures of cognition in healthy persons and patients with Alzheimer's disease. This talk will address the role of nutrition in preventing retinal disease and optimizing visual/cognitive function.
