Dear colleagues,
I have a question regarding colour discrimination threshold in the context of data visualisations.
When using different colours for multiple lines in a line graph on a white background, it seems intuitively clear (and also based on observation) that the effective discriminability between the lines differs from the case where the same colours are presented as adjacent patches of a larger area. Thin lines have a much smaller spatial frequency than the patches and they are surrounded by a white background.
I would expect that the effective discrimination threshold do not only depend on the chromatic distance but also on the line width and the contrast of the background.
Are there any psychophysical studies that address this problem?
Kind regards,
Marco Puts
